Enhancement Focused Projects
South Florida Wrong-Way Detection Technology Implementation Project
As part of the Florida Department of Transportation’s Wrong-Way Driving Prevention Initiative, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise (Enterprise) is enhancing the Wrong-Way Vehicle Detection System in Miami-Dade County.
The Enterprise is increasing the amount of wrong-way signage equipped with sensors to detect vehicles traveling the wrong way along Florida’s Turnpike Extension/State Road (S.R.) 821 from Allapattah Road/SW 112 Avenue/S.R. 989 to Tamiami Trail/SW 8 Street/U.S. 41. These enhancements will assist in monitoring, detecting, and preventing wrong-way drivers, and notifying law enforcement and Traffic Management Center staff for response.
It is estimated the project will cost $3.3 million and construction is anticipated to continue through late 2026.

These enhancements will assist in monitoring, detecting, and preventing wrong-way drivers, and notifying law enforcement and Traffic Management Center staff for response.
It is estimated the project will cost $3.76 million and construction is anticipated to continue through early 2027.

First Coast Expressway/S.R. 23 Safety Enhancements Project From Blanding Boulevard/S.R. 21 to Interstate 10 (I‑10)
Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is enhancing safety operations along First Coast Expressway/S.R. 23 between Blanding Boulevard/S.R. 21 (milepost 31) and I-10 (milepost 46) in Clay and Duval counties. Work consists of installing new wrong-way driving countermeasures, guardrail, and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) components. This project also includes enhancing traffic monitoring components by updating infrastructure for CCTV connectivity and backup generator power.
It is estimated the project will cost $8 million and construction is anticipated to continue through late 2026.

Turnpike Extension/S.R. 821 Lighting Improvements Project
Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is improving the existing roadway lighting along Florida’s Turnpike Extension/State Road (S.R.) 821 from high-pressure sodium to LED lighting, from SW 152 Street to SW 137 Avenue in Miami-Dade County. This work includes lighting enhancements at the SW 152 Street, SW 137 Avenue, and SW 112 Avenue interchanges.
This upgrade will increase roadway safety by providing better visibility for drivers while reducing long-term maintenance costs using modern, energy-efficient lighting.
It is estimated the project will cost $2.7 million and is expected to continue through late 2026.

Polk Parkway/S.R. 570 Lighting Improvements Project
Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is improving the existing roadway lighting along Polk Parkway/State Road (S.R.) 570 from Milepost 0 to Milepost 24 in Polk County.
This upgrade will increase roadway safety by providing better visibility for drivers while also reducing long-term maintenance costs using modern, energy-efficient lighting.

Florida’s Turnpike/S.R. 91 Lighting Improvements Project
The roadway lighting along Florida’s Turnpike/S.R. 91 is being upgraded to LED from north of Griffin Road/S.R. 818 (milepost 54) to south of Sample Road/S.R. 834 (milepost 68) and from Atlantic Avenue/S.R. 806 (milepost 81) to south of Boynton Beach Boulevard/S.R. 806 (milepost 86) in Broward and Palm Beach counties.
This upgrade will increase roadway safety by providing better visibility for drivers while also reducing long-term maintenance costs using modern, energy-efficient lighting.
It is estimated the project will cost $5.4 million and is expected to continue through 2027.

West Palm Beach Service Plaza Parking Improvements Project
Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is improving the existing West Palm Beach Service Plaza located at Milepost 94 on Florida’s Turnpike/State Road (SR) 91. The improvements in this project focus on truck parking facilities at the West Palm Beach Service Plaza in Palm Beach County. Truck parking will be consolidated in the northern section of the service plaza to enhance traffic flow and increase the number of available truck spaces. This initiative will also create additional parking spaces within the plaza for passenger vehicles.
It is estimated the project will cost $32.4 million and is expected to be completed in late 2026.

Florida’s Turnpike Northern Service Plazas Enhancements Project
Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is enhancing services system-wide to enhance the customer experience across Florida’s Turnpike/Sate Road (S.R.) 91. This project focuses on the northern portion of Florida’s Turnpike, including the Okahumpka and Canoe Creek Service Plazas.
Improved landscaping and future technology upgrades will create a fresh, inviting environment for visitors while enriching the overall experience at Enterprise Service Plazas. Additionally, planned enhancements will support safety by installing new, lighting system throughout the plaza limits and infrastructure for future intelligent transportation system (ITS) enhancements.
It is estimated the project will cost $2.2 million and is expected to be completed in late 2026.
