Have you ever wondered what Turnpike collected tolls are used for?

Florida's Turnpike Enterprise (FTE) is a self supporting system, using collected toll revenue to maintain services and add value for its customers. FTE uses customer supported tolls to fund operating costs since no state taxes such as gas tax are used to support the system.
Customer tolls are used to pay for Turnpike operating costs such as: toll collection services, electricity for signs and lighting, cameras to spot traffic incidents, highway patrols by law enforcement, service plaza security, as well as ongoing roadway maintenance.

In addition to operating costs, FTE uses toll revenue to add value to its customers by:

  • Resurfacing the roads every eight to ten years
  • Inspecting and repairing bridges, overpasses and other structures to help ensure the system remains in satisfactory working condition
  • Widening of existing roads to provide more lanes for the traveling public
  • Adding new interchanges to provide additional access to the road network
  • Increasing number of open road tolling facilities so SunPass customers can travel the road network more conveniently
Collected tolls are the primary source of revenue, however, FTE also generates revenue from other sources. This non-toll revenue helps support FTE at no direct cost to its customers. Sources such as Sponsor-A-Highway, State Farm Safety Patrol and other advertising outlets make this possible.

As a result of customer toll dollars and non-toll revenue combined, FTE is committed to meeting customer expectations and will continue to maintain, preserve and improve the road network.
