Preserving and protecting the environment is a major concern throughout the world. Florida's Turnpike Enterprise (FTE) has embraced and implemented a number of "green" initiatives to help conserve resources and become more environmentally friendly. FTE currently employs several leading practices to help decrease the impact on the environment, including: |

| Electronic solutions |
| The SunPass program uses technology to help conserve resources by improving the fuel efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions of customers' vehicles. In addition to environmentally-friendly practices on the road, FTE also conserves resources by applying technology off the road. For example, this edition of the Sun Passages newsletter is all electronic and paper free. |
| Recycling programs |

FTE actively participates in recycling programs at its facilities system-wide. |

Service plazas: Each of the seven service plazas along the Turnpike have made a concerted effort to recycle used products. Customers will notice recycling depositories in both the plaza parking lots and building entrance ways. For your convenience, you may dispose of glass, aluminum and plastic in these receptacles. Service plaza employees have also been longtime proponents of recycling cardboard used in the delivery and transport of goods, as well as recycling cooking and motor oils. |
| Operations buildings: Both the Turnpike Operations Center in Pompano Beach and Florida's Turnpike Headquarters Building in Orlando have initiated large-scale recycling programs throughout their facilities. In the recycling program's first year, thirty-two tons of paper products are expected to be recycled at the Turnpike Operations Center alone! As a long-term goal, Florida's Turnpike Headquarters aims to reduce all recyclable waste by 70 percent. | |
| Environmentally-sound practices |
Building and facility contracts between FTE and its vendors are required to meet the high environmental standards established by Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED). LEED serves as a rating system that encourages and accelerates the global adoption of sustainable "green" building and development practices. |
By "going green," FTE demonstrates its commitment to the environment, the community and most importantly, its customers. FTE looks forward to expanding its "green" initiatives in the near future. |
