Motorists traveling Florida's Turnpike will soon be able to benefit from Turnpike traffic alerts, a free service that quickly communicates traffic updates by either e-mail or cell phone text messaging. Subscribers will be able to customize traffic alert messages to meet their individual traveling needs. This includes not only the method of message communications, but also the time of day to receive the messages and portions of the Turnpike system they would like to receive information about. |

Customers will also be able to update their traffic alert preferences at any time through an online account. For instance, if you use the Turnpike at a time that does not conform to your usual commuting patterns, you can re-program your account and instantly receive messages for different areas, routes and times. |
| To make this possible, Florida's Turnpike has 317 Closed Circuit Television Cameras which monitor the roadways 24 hours a day. These cameras assist the operators in identifying incidents to quickly relay traffic alerts of up to 150 characters per message. |  |
| Florida's Turnpike Enterprise has successfully completed a pilot for the Turnpike traffic alert service, and is scheduled to offer this service to all motorists by winter 2008. | Something else you should know: if you opt to receive messages by cell phone, you will want to first determine whether there is an additional charge for text messaging as part of your cell phone service agreement. |
