Turnpike Travel Tips

We all want to get where we are going quickly and efficiently, but what is even more important is to get to our destination safely.

Distracted driving, including the use of cell phones, is a major contributor to automobile crashes. Between 4,000 to 8,000 crashes related to distracted driving occur daily in the United States. In a year, they contribute to as many as half of the six million U.S. crashes reported annually.

Other distractions include:

  • Reaching for an object
  • Applying make-up
  • Texting
  • Drowsiness
  • Eating
  • Reading the paper

Below are some helpful tips to help prevent distracting situations while driving:

  • Limit distractions in your car.
  • If you need to use your cell phone for talking or texting, exit the road and stop at a location where you can safely use your phone without creating a driving hazard.
  • Get plenty of rest. The steady monotonous rhythm of a vehicle can sometimes cause sleepiness, so get a good night's sleep before taking the wheel.
  • If traveling with small children, provide them with games or books to keep them busy.
  • Read the paper at home. Some people try to catch up on current events while they drive. Remember, if your eyes are on the paper, then they are off the road.
