Toll-by-Plate
Toll-by-Plate is an imaged based electronic toll collection system that uses photographic images of a vehicle's license plate to identify the customer responsible for payment. It is like the SunPass electronic toll collection system, but without a transponder device. Toll-by-Plate provides added convenience of never having to slow down or stop to pay a toll for infrequent users of the Turnpike.
Under All-Electronic Open Road Tolling, a vehicle passes under a specialized toll gantry and is either recognized as a SunPass customer, or if the vehicle has no transponder, is recognized as a Toll-by-Plate customer. Please see diagram to the right. Toll-by-Plate customers have two payment options:
1.) Customers can contact the Department to set-up a Toll-by-Plate Pre-Paid Account by providing the vehicle's license plate number and payment option (credit or debit card, or cash, check or money order deposits). Every time that vehicle passes through a toll gantry the account is debited for the Toll-by-Plate toll amount.
2.) Customers can also wait for their toll invoice in the mail. After a vehicle passes through the toll gantry, a photographic image of the vehicle's license plate is recorded. The Toll-by-Plate process uses images of a customer's license plate, matches that plate with the registered owner of the vehicle and issues a bill for the Toll-by-Plate toll amount plus administrative charges. The customer's first bill will be mailed fourteen days after the first use and any subsequent invoices will be sent on a monthly basis.
Customers have the choice of opening a Toll-by-Plate account in advance or just waiting to get the bill in the mail - it's just that easy.
