FLORIDA’S TURNPIKE WEEKLY TRAFFIC UPDATE

FORT LAUDERDALE (May 11, 2006)Florida’s Turnpike announces updated lane closures and work zones due to construction and maintenance projects in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Martin counties, beginning Sunday, May 14.

Note: Speeding fines double in construction zones when workers are present. Motorists should drive with caution through the work zones and adhere to posted detour signs and speed limits.

PALM BEACH COUNTY

TURNPIKE WIDENING - ATLANTIC AVENUE TO THE LANTANA TOLL PLAZA (MILEPOST
80-89)

· One northbound and one southbound lane closed and one open in each
direction, from Milepost 82 to 89, north of Atlantic Blvd. to the Lantana Toll Plaza.
· Lanes closed from Sunday, May 14, through Thursday, May 18.
· All closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Widening of Florida’s Turnpike from four to six lanes between the Atlantic Avenue interchange and the Lantana Toll Plaza. Reconstruction of the Atlantic Avenue interchange. The widening portion of the project started in 2004 and is scheduled for completion in 2007. The interchange project started in 2005 and is scheduled for completion in 2009. Approximate cost: $81 million.


BROWARD COUNTY

SAWGRASS EXPRESSWAY WIDENING – CORAL RIDGE DRIVE TO FLORIDA’S TURNPIKE
· One eastbound and one westbound lane closed. At least one lane in each
direction will remain open.
· From Sunday, May 14, through Saturday, May 20.
· Eastbound lane closed between 7:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m.; westbound lane
closed between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m.
Additionally, the following cross streets will have lanes closed beneath
the Sawgrass Expressway:

· University Drive – One of three lanes in each direction closed 24/7;
traffic may be shifted to one side of the roadway, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., for two nights this week.
· Riverside Drive – One lane in each direction closed and one lane in
each direction open 24/7.
· US 441 (State Road 7) – One lane in each direction closed from 6 a.m.
to 8 p.m. ; two lanes in each direction closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
· Lyons Road – One of three southbound lanes closed 24/7.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Consists of widening the Sawgrass Expressway from four to six lanes, construction of sound walls and other improvements. The project is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2007.

SAWGRASS EXPRESSWAY MEDIAN GUARDRAIL – INTERSTATE 75 TO ATLANTIC BLVD.
· No lane closures this week.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Median guardrail will be installed. The scheduled completion date is early summer; however, work is proceeding ahead of schedule and may be completed in the next few weeks.

TURNPIKE WIDENING – GRIFFIN RD. TO SUNRISE BLVD. (Milepost 53 to 58)
· Periodic, single lane closures on the Turnpike's southbound and
northbound lanes between Griffin Rd. and Sunrise Blvd. (Milepost 53 to 58).
· From Sunday, May 14, through Friday, May 19.
· Between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Additionally: LOCAL ROADWAY AFFECTED
Broward Blvd. eastbound and westbound under the Turnpike: 24-hour single lane closures.

TURNPIKE WIDENING – SUNRISE BLVD. TO ATLANTIC BLVD. (Milepost 58 to 62)
· Periodic, double lane closures on the southbound and north lanes, on
the Turnpike between Sunrise Blvd. and Commercial Blvd. At least one lane will remain open at all times.
· From Sunday, May 14, through Friday, May 19.
· Between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project is the first phase of a multi-year, multi-million dollar construction program to widen Florida’s Turnpike in Broward County from six to eight lanes. The first phase to widen the Turnpike has started on the southbound lanes from Griffin Road (Exit 53) to Atlantic Boulevard (Exit 66). In addition to road-widening work, an important component of this project is the construction of sound barrier walls which will be built along residential areas. Approximate project cost: $265 million. Completion is anticipated during the summer of 2010.

 


MIAMI-DADE COUNTY

CONSTRUCTION ON STATE ROAD 836 (DOLPHIN EXPRESSWAY)
AT THE TURNPIKE INTERCHANGE (Milepost 26)

· Two of three lanes closed on the southbound Turnpike exit ramp to SR
836 (Exit 26). One lane will remain open during this period.
· Until further notice.
· 24 hours a day.

MARTIN COUNTY

BRIDGE REPAIRS AT STUART /MARTIN DOWNS BLVD. INTERCHANGE (MILEPOST 133)

· One southbound lane closed and one open between Mileposts 133 and 135.
· On Wednesday, May 17, and Thursday, May 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and
from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION : Installation of additional beam at the Stuart overpass. The project is expected to be completed within 30 days from the beginning of the construction work.


ST. LUCIE COUNTY
 
INTERCHANGE CONSTRUCTION AT BECKER ROAD (MILEPOSTS 138-139)

  • Periodic lane closures, both north- and southbound, overnight, 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The City of Port St. Lucie has begun construction of a SunPass-only interchange to connect Florida’s Turnpike with Becker Road.  Other improvements include the installation of a temporary barrier for lane shifts while work continues on the construction of a new Becker Road overpass.  Construction is scheduled to be complete in late summer 2006.

TURNPIKE RESURFACING PROJECT (MILEPOSTS 153 to 169)

  • Single lane closures, north- and southbound, overnight, Sunday through Thursday, until further notice. 
  • Intermittent, single lane closures in the north- and southbound directions, during daylight hours, Monday through Friday, until further notice.
  • Single, outside  lane closure, northbound between mileposts 162-164, continuously from 8 a.m., Monday, May 8 to noon, Friday, May 12 for emergency guardrail repair 

                PROJECT DESCRIPTION:  Crews are completing installation of guardrail pad and guardrail at all canal crossings.  In addition, they are completing grading, and installing sod in the median and outside shoulders as well as installing permanent barrier wall at all overpasses within the project limits.  This project is scheduled for completion in early June 2006.

Central Florida Traffic Advisory Update Releases

OCOEE, FL (May 4, 2006) — Florida’s Turnpike announces lane closures and work zone information for construction and maintenance projects in Central Florida, beginning Sunday, May 7, 2006.

            Florida’s Turnpike strives to maintain traffic flow in work zones; however, motorists may encounter heavier traffic near construction sites.  Motorists should drive with caution through the work zones, and adhere to posted detour signs and speed limits.
Note: Speeding fines double in construction zones when workers are present.

OTHER PROJECTS
OSCEOLA/ORANGE COUNTIES

TOLL ROAD 429—THE DANIEL WEBSTER WESTERN BELTWAY PART C

  • Motorists traveling on Interstate 4 should be prepared for inside, single lane closures, both east- and westbound, 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday, May 7  to Friday, May 12.
  • Motorists traveling on SR 429 should be alert for off-peak daytime single lane closures in each direction near the toll plazas at US 192.

            The Turnpike has opened a five-mile section of the $326 million Daniel Webster Western Beltway to traffic between Seidel Road and US 192.  The newly opened section of the Western Beltway provides an additional fourteen miles of roadway looping around western Orange County.  The Western Beltway provides alternatives to motorists wishing to avoid the Interstate 4 and US 192 tourist corridors, while providing easy access to the Turnpike mainline, Toll 408 (the East/West Expressway), US 27 and CR 545.
            The five-mile section of the Western Beltway in Osceola County between Interstate 4 and US 192 will open to traffic on December 7, 2006.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY


 ORANGE COUNTY

TURNPIKE WIDENING PROJECT (MILEPOSTS 254-259)

  • Motorists traveling on Toll 528 between mileposts 3-5 should expect delays due to intermittent, single lane closures, both east-and westbound, Sunday through Thursday, during the overnight hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
  • Single lane closures in each direction at Consulate Drive, US 17-92/441 (Orange Blossom Trail), and on the Turnpike mainline between mileposts 254-259 from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Motorists should expect flagging operations near the Exit 255 ramp at Consulate Drive during off-peak daylight hours as construction materials are delivered to the site.

            PROJECT DESCRIPTION:  This $77.5 million project adds two lanes in each direction to the Turnpike between Toll 528 and Interstate 4.  Reconstruction and widening of the Shingle Creek Bridge, the overpasses at Toll 528, Orange Blossom Trail (US 17/92/441), Oak Ridge Road, Sand Lake Road and the Interstate 4 ramps is also included in this project.  This Turnpike widening project is scheduled to be complete in November 2007.  The project includes setting barrier wall and installing asphalt to accommodate temporary travel lanes during construction as well as activities associated with demolition work and new construction on Shingle Creek Bridge.  Construction activities will occur behind barrier wall.  There are no lane closures currently scheduled during the day.  Motorists should exercise caution while traveling in the area, and watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting the work zone.

RAMP MODIFICATIONS AT TOLL ROAD 408
 (HOLLAND EAST/WEST EXPRESSWAY)  (MILEPOSTS 264-266)

  • Motorists traveling southbound on the Turnpike to eastbound on SR 408 should be alert for single lane closures, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Monday, May 8 to Thursday, May  11
  • Turnpike motorists should be alert  for single lane closures, north- and southbound, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Monday, May 8 to Thursday, May 11 as crews continue work on the new eastbound SR 408 bridge

           PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Construction continues on the $26 million ramp modification project at the Holland East/West Expressway (Toll 408) interchange.  Scheduled for completion in July ’06, the project includes construction of two new ramps, which will complete the interchange.  Ramps will be constructed from the Turnpike northbound to eastbound Toll 408 and westbound on Toll 408 to the Turnpike southbound.


Fourth Street Bridge Replacement at
Milepost 272 and Northbound Exit Ramp Improvements (Mileposts 271-272)

  • Single lane closures, both north- and southbound, 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday,  7  through Thursday, May 11
  • Fourth Street Bridge traffic is reduced to one lane, continuously, until the new bridge is complete.  A signal is in place on the bridge to control traffic movements.  One-way traffic, only, is allowed on the bridge.

            PROJECT DESCRIPTION:  This $4 million project replaces the Fourth Street Bridge over the Turnpike near Milepost 272.  The bridge replacement accommodates the future widening of the Turnpike through Orange County, which is scheduled to begin in 2007.  After the bridgework is completed, the Turnpike’s northbound exit ramp at Milepost 272 will be extended to the south, and widened to two lanes.  The Fourth Street Bridge/Milepost 272 project is scheduled for completion in March 2007.


OSCEOLA COUNTY

NEW INTERCHANGE AT KISSIMMEE PARK ROAD (MILEPOSTS 239-240)

  • Single lane closures northbound, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Monday, May 8 to Saturday, May 13 to accommodate delivery of materials to the job site.

            PROJECT DESCRIPTION:   This $18.9 million project includes construction of a SunPass-only northbound on ramp and a SunPass-only southbound off ramp at Kissimmee Park Road (Milepost 240) near its intersection with Old Canoe Creek Road.  Included in the project are the reconstruction and realignment of the Kissimmee Park Road Bridge over the Turnpike, and the reconstruction of Kissimmee Park Road and removal of the curve in its alignment with Old Canoe Creek Road east of the bridge.  The project limits extend to the west near Clay Whaley Road.  The new ramps are scheduled to open by the end of the year.
            Most construction activities will occur Mondays through Saturdays, during the overnight hours of 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.  There may be occasional lane closures or traffic shifts that will affect off-peak traffic on the Turnpike, Kissimmee Park Road and Canoe Creek Road.  There will also be increased truck traffic on all three roads as construction materials are delivered to the job site.


OKEECHOBEE/INDIAN RIVER COUNTIES


POLK COUNTY

No construction projects are currently scheduled for the Polk Parkway.


SEMINOLE COUNTY


LAKE COUNTY

LEESBURG MAINLINE TOLL PLAZA ENHANCEMENT PROJECT (MILEPOST 287)        

  • No lane closures are scheduled for the week of May 7.

            PROJECT DESCRIPTION:  Construction has begun on a $10 million design-build SunPass enhancement project at the Turnpike’s Leesburg mainline toll plaza.  The plaza will be widened to accommodate the addition of two cash lanes in each direction.  To improve continuity with other Turnpike system plaza configurations, the SunPass-only lanes will be relocated to the extreme left.  Additionally, the approaches to the plazas will be widened, and enhanced signage, lighting and landscaping will be installed.  The Leesburg mainline toll plaza enhancement project is scheduled for completion in December 2006.


SUMTER COUNTY


 
 

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, part of the Florida Department of Transportation, oversees a 454-mile system of limited-access toll highways: the Turnpike Mainline extending north from Homestead in Miami-Dade County to Wildwood in Sumter County, the Seminole Expressway and Southern Connector (Toll 417) in Seminole, Orange and Osceola Counties, the Beachline Expressway West (Toll 528) in Orange County, the Polk Parkway (Toll 570) in Polk County, the Veterans Expressway and Suncoast Parkway in Hillsborough, Pasco and Hernando Counties (Toll 589), the Sawgrass Expressway (Toll 869) in Broward County, and the Daniel Webster Western Beltway Part C (Toll 429) in Orange County.
