THE VETERAN'S EXPRESSWAY
The Veterans Expressway is part of Florida's Turnpike System. The Turnpike expansion program was authorized by the Florida Legislature in 1990 to meet the State's backlog of needed highway facilites. The Legislature set environmental and financial feasibility standards, authorized toll increases on the Mainline Turnpike, and allowed a higher toll rate-per-mile on the new projects through the enactment of Section 338.231 (1), Florida Statutes. To date, Florida's Turnpike has opened five expansion projects and acquired one under this expansion program. The Veterans Expressway was the Turnpike's second expansion project.
The Veterans Expressway/Toll Road 589 is a four-lane, limited- access north-south toll facility that extends 15 miles from near State Road 60/Courtney Campbell Causeway west of Tampa Interantional Airport to State Road 597/Dale Mabry Highway in northern Hillsborough County. It was designed to handle increasing traffic on Tampa Bay's commuter corridors.
There are two mainline toll plazas on this facility (Anderson and Sugarwood) and five tolled interchanges at Hillsborough Avenue, Waters Avenue, Wilsky Boulevard, Gunn Highway, and Hutchison Road. Interchanges with no toll collection include Courtney Campbell Causeway, Independence Parkway, Memorial Highway, Anderson Road, Linebaugh Avenue, Ehrlich Road, Dale Mabry Highway and Van Dyke Road.
VETERANS EXPRESSWAY GUARDRAIL IMPROVEMENTS
Beginning in January 2005 Florida’s Turnpike will replace and
install additional guardrail along the Veterans Expressway/Toll
